Using formative assessment in the delivery of a level one module for a media arts degree

Abstract: This case study explains the strategy I used to substantially increase the amount of formative assessment for two modules that I taught at Thames Valley University.  The assessment strategy takes into account the research done on the importance of formative assessment as well as my own knowledge of students on a Media Arts theoretical degree course at TVU.  This case study discusses the outcome of this pilot project in terms of the students' learning, and how this method of assessment encouraged the students to take more responsibility for the development of their writing skills.

Author information: Angela Devas is a lecturer in film and media studies at Thames Valley University.  She teaches on theoretical modules and her current concern is improving students' abilities in their writing skills, particularly with academic writing.  For two years she was the academic developer for communication and media studies at the ADC-LTSN.
