ADM-HEA is pleased to announce the second year of the Art, Design and Media Teaching Fellowship Scheme (ADMTFS).

The scheme is part of ADM-HEA’s aim to support the professional development and recognition of art, design and media staff in HE and to ensure that teaching is valued and rewarded.

The deadline for applications is Monday, 30 March, 2009.

Digitisation Project

This JISC funded digitisation project has produced a teaching resource of skeletal material from an excavation at Hulton Abbey. Whilst primarily developed for forensic science teaching, the uniqueness and historical significance of the material gives the resource an interdisciplinary value.

The project resource was developed using Macromedia Director to produce a standalone product and is available on DVD in Windows and Macintosh formats. By developing the resource this way, individual images of the skeletal material can be searched for and examined using interactive tools.

Archival Sound Recordings – Recording of the Month competition
 
Archival Sound Recordings http://sounds.bl.uk is an online audio resource which makes selections of music, spoken word and environmental sounds from the British Library Sound Archive available online.  Recordings are available for playback and download to staff and students in UK higher and further education.
 
To enter the Recording of the Month competition, simply log in to the website using your Shibboleth/ Open Athens password, pick a favourite recording, write up to 50 words about why you love it, and send it to ginevra.house@bl.uk
 
The prize is a £20 book token and winners are picked monthly.

The first issue of Enquiry - the ACES Journal of Undergraduate Research at Sheffield Hallam University (SHU), is now available to read at:

'Enquiry' is a student-led and faculty sponsored double-blind peer-reviewed journal dedicated to showcasing students' research achievements, encouraging interdisciplinary intellectual exploration, and furthering broader interest in the Arts, Computing, Engineering and Sciences.

Briefly the key opportunities created by 'Enquiry' are:

* It provides sustainability for undergraduate research by advocating and advertising the wealth of work that is undertaken by undergraduate students at SHU;
* It enables students to engage directly with the processes of research and publication;
* It provides an opportunity to forge more visible links between teaching, learning and research;
* It has developed an active community of student learners who will be exposed to the process of enquiry;
* It provides ACES with marketing opportunities upon which potential students can be recruited.

Playing with Learning 2: Making Connections
Scarman House Conference Centre, Warwick

Playing with Learning is a unique opportunity for practitioners to engage with innovative and exciting ways of energising learning with HE in FE learners as it centres on delegate participation in both the main sessions and specially designed interactive workshops.
This now-annual conference, organised by the Higher Education Academy HE in FE Enhancement Team, is designed for lecturers from all disciplines who teach HE in Further Education Institutions. Held in partnership with the JISC Regional Support Centre West Midlands, and building on last year's extremely successful inaugural event, the day is certain to be over-subscribed so early booking is essential to avoid disappointment.

Annual Conference 2009: "Student Perspectives on Employability"
Sheffield Hallam University Centre for Employability, Sheffield Hallam University

The third annual conference of the Sheffield Hallam University Centre for Excellence in Employability (e3i) will focus on student perspectives on employability. Although much has been written and researched in relation to employer and academic staff perspectives on employability, hitherto there has been little research or inquiry into student views. The conference will explore how students understand the notion of employability, to what extent they deem this an important aspect of their higher education studies, the aspects of employability they feel need a greater emphasis and suggestions for programme (re)design. The conference will feature:
 

  • A keynote speaker from the National Union of Students
  • Findings from projects at Sheffield Hallam University where academics have been working with students on the employability aspects of their programmes
  • Workshops by other CETLs which have an employability focus
  • The launch of the STARs electronic resource, produced by Sheffield Hallam University, the Open University, and the University of Bedfordshire, which helps students transform their experiences into skills and attributes recognised as desirable by employers

 
The conference will be of interest to students, academics and colleagues involved in supporting student learning and the development of employability skills in a university context.

Learning on Screen 2009 Conference: Disability and Access to Moving Image and Sound
Wellcome Collection
7 and 8 April 2009

Peter White MBE, the BBC’s Disability Correspondent, will open the forthcoming conference which is being organised by the British Universities Film & Video Council (BUFVC). The key theme of the Learning on Screen conference in 2009 is Disability and Access to Moving Image and Sound. There will also be sessions demonstrating new online services delivering access to moving image and sound content.

The Learning on Screen Conference will offer an opportunity for academic service providers, web developers, broadcasters, educationists, advisors, publishers and representatives of disability groups to meet to see examples of best practise, to learn about new techniques and to discuss the challenge of reaching the standards of delivery required by legislation to meet the expectations of users.



Learning on Screen 2009 will take place at the Wellcome Trust. During the two days there will be opportunities to visit The Wellcome Collection's spectacular permanent and temporary exhibitions.

Next Generation Technologies in Practice Conference

Following on the success of previous Designs on eLearning international conferences since 2005 in the use of technology for teaching and learning in Art, Design and Communication, Designs on eLearning 2009 will be held at the University of the Arts, London between 2nd and 4th  September 2009.
