Art Design Media Teaching Fellowship Scheme 2010-11
The deadline for submission of applications is Friday, 19 March 2010.
The Art Design Media Subject Centre (ADM-HEA) is pleased to announce the third year of its Teaching Fellowship Scheme.
The Scheme is part of the Subject Centre’s aim to support the professional development and recognition of staff teaching art, design and media in HE and to ensure that their teaching is recognised, valued and rewarded. The particular focus of this award is on studio-based teaching staff who have previously been under represented in institutional and national award schemes. In this context, studio based learning and teaching includes: work in museums, labs, workshops and field-work in a specified creative practice context and is understood as a learning space where the environment, in and of itself, contributes to the 'curriculum' and studio based practice.
We are asking nominees to demonstrate innovative teaching by providing evidence of achievement in the teaching and support of student learning. Evidence of effective teaching may be presented in a range of formats that could include film, video and audio files.
The scheme’s strength is that it recognises the diversity of staff who support student learning in art, design and media subjects and how crucial individual teachers are in the support and enhancement of learning and teaching.
ADM-HEA has allocated £30,000 in support of the Fellowship Scheme and we anticipate awarding funding of between £1,000 and £3,000 per project. It is expected that institutions will contribute matched funding via in-kind support.

New Case study – Using Open Online Resources to Enhance Social Learning

This case study looks at the integration of open online communication tools in a ‘MA in the Creative Economy’ programme at Kingston University’s School of Business. Forty students set up individual blogs, created Twitter accounts, published an online research library and collaborated on team websites to record their progress and engage the public with their efforts. All of the tools used were free and publically available that allowed students to own their work and retain access to it beyond graduation.

Discipline-focused Learning Technology Enhancement Academy 2010
The School of Art and Design at Wolverhampton University has been successful in their application to take part in the Higher Education Academy’s Discipline-Focused Learning Technology Enhancement Academy Programme 2010. The programme aims to support subject-focused department teams in the use of technology to enhance learning, teaching and assessment.

Turning up the HEAT in Wales
JISC TechDis is once again inviting bids for HEAT scheme funding from higher education institutions to boost inclusive practice.
As the UK’s leading advisory service on inclusion and accessibility, JISC TechDis is keen to encourage universities and colleges to develop and promote good inclusive practice in teaching and learning. Round 4 of the Heat scheme (HEAT4Wales) is open to staff working in HE or FE institutions in receipt of HEFCW (Higher Education Funding Council for Wales) funding. Projects can be specific to the teaching of a particular discipline, support a specific role or have a more generic applicability right across the sector.
The HEAT scheme will provide staff working in higher education in Wales (teaching staff, library staff, careers officers, staff developers, IT specialists and accessibility or support specialists) with technology with which to develop or uncover an aspect of good inclusive practice. Previous rounds have led to a number of successful projects that have impacted on accessibility practice in UK institutions and some have gone on to be nominated for awards.
A key focus of HEAT4Wales will be the JISC priority areas; Lifelong Learning, Work-Related Learning, Employer Engagement and Business & Community Engagement. Project Bids, up to a maximum of £1200, will be evaluated by a panel consisting of JISC TechDis and volunteers from the Higher Education Academy and JISC RSC Wales and must be submitted by 22nd February 2010.

Enhancing Learning through Technology: Evidence-based Practice Seminar Series and Syntheses
As part of its HEFCE funded Enhancing learning through Technology programme the Academy is working with institutions to synthesise and disseminate good practice in the use of technology to enhance learning teaching and assessment for the benefit of the wider HE community.
Activities for 2010 are focusing on three areas: assessment and feedback; employability and employee learning: professional learning and teaching practice and include:
1. Evidence-based Practice Seminar Series 2010
A series of 29 free seminars will take place between February and July 2010 to promote the effective use of technology in the areas of: assessment and feedback; employee learning and employability; and professional learning and teaching practice. The seminars are open to all those interested in the topic area, with preference being given to staff working in HE and FE institutions.
Outcomes from each seminar will include a briefing paper for the sector to be disseminated via the Academy’s Evidence Net service.

2. Syntheses of evidence-based practice
Following an open call, the Academy has commissioned the universities listed below to conduct in-depth syntheses of research and evaluation project findings in the following areas:
The University of Southampton: assessment and feedback
Leeds Metropolitan University: employability and employee learning;
The Open University: professional learning and teaching practice.
The syntheses will include implications for practice and provide exemplars of evidence-informed practice involving the use of technology to enhance the student learning experience for each of the areas. As well as involving ‘desk-based’ activities, the syntheses will require engagement with practitioners in the related fields and the associated seminar series. The timescale for the syntheses is 1 January – 31 August 2010.

Celebrating Partnerships in Learning, 7th Annual LDHEN Symposium

This year’s conference is a joint event organised by the LearnHigher CETLand the Learning Development in Higher Education Network (LDHEN). It will be hosted by Nottingham Trent University.
The theme this year is " Celebrating Partnerships in Learning", reflecting the achievements of LearnHigher, as a collaboration between sixteen universities, and of LDHEN with its emphasis on the value of leaning partnerships between students, academics, researchers and developers.

Enhancing the postgraduate research experience: exploring intellectual climate

This is the first of two one-day events in 2010 which will consider an aspect of the PGR experience and explore ways of sharing effective practice and enhancing provision in that area. This event is open to all staff with an interest in enhancing postgraduate research provision, and a number of current PGR students from a variety of institutions will also be attending.
The programme includes presentations of case studies from institutions who have successfully improved their PRES intellectual climate scores, the opportunity to discuss and explore aspects of intellectual climate with colleagues and current PGR students, and sessions linking PRES to QAA and NUS work.

Success in Developing Student Employability: Employability CETL Conference 2010

Learning Landscapes and the Idea of the University: efficiency, effectiveness and expression

This conference, hosted by Queen Mary College, University of London, reports the findings of the recent Learning Landscapes in Higher Education study, funded by HEFCE/SFC/HEFCW. The aim of the study has been to look at ways in which teaching and learning spaces are being designed and developed in the higher education sector. The Learning Landscapes project has created a suite of development tools for enhancing the processes of teaching and learning space development, which will be made available at the event.
Key topics include:
- Strategic experimentation, e.g., between aesthetics and pedagogy; connecting the virtual and the built environment
- The student voice, as client and consultant
- Evaluation and Research: learning from experience
- The idea of the university: embedding academic values in design

Communities of Learning - SEDA Spring Teaching, Learning and Assessment Conference

This year the SEDA Conference will explore and debate the issues around communities of learning. What is the nature of the communities that we are wishing to create and support? What are the tensions inherent in fostering such communities? What is the nature of existing communities? ISSOTL10 Conference - Global Theories and Local Practices: Intstitutional, Disciplinary and Cultural Variations

The International Society for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (ISSOTL) conference has as its theme a dialectic, chosen to stimulate discussion and debate amongst the international SoTL community:
Global theories: are there theories of learning and teaching that can be demonstrated to transcend national, cultural and/or disciplinary differences?
Local practices: How important is context? To what extent, if at all, do national, cultural and/or disciplinary differences inevitably affect approaches to pedagogy and student learning outcomes?
Participants are invited to submit proposal for presentations that focus one of the following:
Teaching and learning: Focussing on what teaching, curriculum and/or assessment practices are being engaged in order to have impact on student learning.
Organizational change: Focussing on larger issues.
Faculty development (supporting changes in teaching and learning practice).

Research teaching linkages to enhance student learning

The PRHE10 conference is a biennial event which brings together researchers and practitioners to share research findings, promote rigorous pedagogical research and build collaborative research networks. This year it has been organised to follow on from the ISSOTL conference (see above) The conference will as usual be organised by Liverpool Hope University but this year the location of the conference is in the centre of Liverpool at the Foresight Centre.
The PRHE10 conference committee is now inviting abstracts for papers from those who are currently researching learning and teaching in the higher education context. Abstracts will be considered in the following areas which relate to the overall theme of research-teaching linkages to enhance student learning.
