GLAD09 Conference: Dialogues in Art and Design

21-22 October 2009
ADM-HEA is supporting and contributing to this event through the production of the conference book which brings together research work from the Centres for Excellence in Learning and Teaching (CETLs). Initiated in England and Northern Ireland, CETLs reward excellence in teaching practice, and invest in pedagogic development. Most of the CETLs are focused on specific subject areas or groupings in specific institutions. They have been conducting research projects, stimulating innovation and disseminating good practice since they were established. The GLAD09 conference, through dissemination and sharing the work of the CETLs across the whole of the UK, will help deliver substantial benefits to students, practitioners and HE institutions. Challenging and insightful conference workshops will focus on topics drawn from the new publication based around three main themes:
· Learning, teaching and studio practice
· Strategies, tactics and change
· Learning spaces and learning technologies
This conference has been organised and sponsored by GLAD, ADM-HEA and the featured CETLs. It will be hosted by York St John University and the C4C CETL.
The cost of the conference is £180, or £279 including one night’s accommodation (21st October) at the Park Inn Hotel in York. The conference fee includes a copy of the new book.

Feedback from students –
request for information
In collaboration with other humanities Subject Centres, ADM-HEA is trying to gather some information about how its community collects and uses feedback from students. (By ‘feedback’ we mean information gathered from students about their learning experience). This would include the National Student Survey data as well as data gathered by the course, department or institution.) In order for us to plan how we can best help departments make use of feedback data, we would be interested to know:
- how you gather feedback from students
- what sort of feedback is most useful
- what you do with the data that’s gathered
- whether you give ‘feedback on feedback’ to students
- about any successes or problems you have encountered

Resources available from the Visual Arts Data
A set of posters and postcards are now available which showcase the thousands of digital images that are available online and free for educational use from the Visual Arts Data Service (VADS) at http://www.vads.ac.uk
The publicity material is available freely to universities, colleges, schools and libraries across the UK to promote the VADS image collection to staff and students and will be useful for inductions and library training sessions in the new term.

This September JISC Digital Media are hosting two
free seminars focussing on key topics for individuals involved with digital
media. The seminars are funded by the Joint Information System Committee
under the 'JISC ITT Workshops & Seminars: Achievements & Challenges in

Successfully Building and Managing Digital Media Collection

In order for a digitisation project to provide useful, effective content many interlinking aspects need to be considered. This seminar, which draws on the knowledge of experts in the field, considers some of the vital facets which lie quite apart from the actual act of digitising. Topics range from case studies of large, successful projects, recording accurate and relevant metadata, rights issues and balancing the demands of users and stake holders.

Obsolescence, deterioration of physical storage media or withdrawal of institutional support: just what will prove to be the greatest threat to the materials we digitise today? This seminar projects one hundred years into the future and attempts to predict the future ‘preservability’ of what we digitise today. This seminar will examine changing user demands and inevitable developments in technology.

Dr Berry O’Donovan: Deputy Director of Assessment Standards Knowledge Exchange CETL (ASKe) and Acting Head of Learning and Teaching at the Business School (Oxford Brookes). Her current research is focused on assessment and feedback, cultivating student community and the intellectual development of management undergraduates.
Confirmed guest speakers include:
- Prof Peter Hartley, Professor of Education Development, Director of the Centre for Academic Practice and Head of the Educational Development Team, University of Bradford.
Karen Handley, Senior Lecturer in HRM and Organisational Behaviour and a Fellow
at the Brookes Centre for Teaching and Learning. Her particular interest is in
student engagement with feedback.

Promoting Equity in Higher Education

This two-day residential research conference provides an opportunity for colleagues to take stock of, and engage with, equity research five years after the HEFCE-commissioned ‘Barriers Review’ was initiated.
The wide-ranging review of widening participation research was critical about both the quality and scope of much equity-related research. It also noted the lack of evidence about the effectiveness and impact of work in this area. This event will examine the role of research in promoting equity in higher education, seek to build sector capacity to undertake and use research and evaluation data and provide the opportunity for delegates to hear about current projects.
Equity is taken to mean the access, participation and experience of diverse students in higher education, including institutional anticipation and response to diversity. In short, we are connecting the areas of widening participation and equality and diversity.
We envisage colleagues from the widening participation, equality and diversity, disability, lifelong learning, research, learning and teaching, academic/student support, marketing, recruitment and admissions communities will be interested in attending.
The conference is organised by the Higher Education Academy, as part of its EvidenceNet service.

Retention Convention: What works?
Student Retention and Success

This Retention Convention aims to identify research to help answer the question ‘what works’ in relation to student retention and success. It further aims to promote theory and research evidence in this area.
The convention is jointly organised by the Higher Education Academy and Action on Access, and will draw on the Student Retention and Success Programme funded by the Paul Hamlyn Foundation and the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE). The seven projects involved in the programme will be represented.
The event is open to individuals with a strategic or operational interest in retention and student success.

DRS2010 Conference ( Design Research
Society International Conference)

Deadline for proposals: Monday, 12 October 2009
To be held under the theme, Design & Complexity, the Conference will be a springboard for sharing ideas and concepts about issues in design research. The theme is intended as a focus for stimulating discussion and exchange among researchers exploring design problems of a complex nature as well as novel approaches for dealing with them. Contributions are sought on a wide range of topics, whether relating directly to the theme or to other contemporary issues of interest to the design research community
This is a general design research conference, and it is expected that a wide variety of work in progress or with final results will be reported. Irrespective of range and stage of research, the organisers expect the highest standards of scholarship in setting the work in context, explicating the methods of inquiry,
and reporting results which may be of help to other researchers or practitioners.
In addition to other streams, DRS 2010 will provide dedicated sessions addressing topics of particular pertinence to specific special interest groups (SIGs). Contributors are invited to submit proposals on themes that relate to the three active DRS SIGs:
- Special Interest Group on Experiential Knowledge
- Special Interest Group on Design for Health and Well Being
- Special Interest Group on Design Pedagogy
Contributions are invited on papers that deal with different facets of contemporary approaches to design research, education or practice. All proposals will be independently peer-reviewed by at least two members of the DRS 2010 review committee.

First issue of UCAS’ new research
The editors of the UCAS Admissions Research Journal (UARJ), a new electronic, peer-reviewed research journal, are pleased to invite submissions to the first issue.
The focus of UARJ is admissions, with a particular emphasis on work that contributes to shared understanding, among academic researchers, policy-makers and admissions practitioners, of factors that affect the transition to higher education, widening participation, recruitment, and good practice in admissions.
