The Art Design Media Subject Centre of the Higher Education Academy (ADM-HEA) invites students on art, design or media higher education courses in the UK to enter this year’s writing competition. Students are asked to submit a piece of critical/creative writing exploring the theme of learning spaces.
The winner will receive an iPod Touch and have their writing published in the Subject Centre’s Networks magazine and on its website. The winner will also be invited (all expenses paid) to the Higher Education Academy’s Annual Conference taking place in July 2009.
All entries that meet the criteria and make use of the guidance will be published on the ADM-HEA website.
The closing date for entries is Friday 27 March 2009.

AHRC Launches New £8m Fellowship Scheme
Arts and Humanities Research Council announces the launch of a new fellowship scheme with an initial annual allocation of £8 million.
The new AHRC fellowship scheme represents a reaffirmation of the AHRC’s commitment to fund the research time needed to undertake world-leading
research with impact and to support the career development of outstanding researchers in the arts and humanities.
The new scheme allows for:
• highly flexible funding for researchers seeking to devote between 50% and 100% of their time over periods of up to nine months to undertake research in any areas within the AHRC’s remit.
• a route for early career researchers, which will provide for mentoring and career development support.
• funding of up to £120,000 (100% FEC) to include research costs and communication and dissemination activities to maximise the impact of the research outcomes.
The new scheme replaces the previous Research Leave scheme, the last round of which closes on March 5th 2009. The Fellowships scheme will offer more flexible provision designed to add value to QR-funded time and institutional support for research career development, and to complement other fellowship schemes available to UK arts and humanities researchers. The scheme will be decoupled from institutional leave, and so will enable award holders to take up their Fellowship when the research needs to be done, rather than when leave happens to be due.
The new scheme and will have a rolling open deadline. The first applications will be accepted from the 1st September 2009 with the first Fellowships expected to start in autumn 2010.

The seminar will be given by Dr Matthew Williamson and Dr Giles Martin of QMUL and will be presenting some results of their research into student transition into higher education. This research, which focuses on expectations and experiences of learning and teaching and the ways in which students negotiate the transition from the teaching they have experienced before entering higher education and the methods they are exposed to, and skills they have to develop, once they start at university. The seminar will present some findings from the large scale survey of new entrants to HE carried out before they started their courses, as well as some initial findings from the interviews which were carried out with a sample of students during their first year of study. It will also investigate ways in which this transition can be made easier for students.

‘Space’ : a workshop in the ARTSWORK 10by10Series

There is still an opportunity for teacher-practitioners [HE/FE teachers also currently engaged in professional creative practice] from across the creative disciplines, to participate in the second 10by10 workshop, ‘Space’.
‘Space’ is designed for teacher-practitioners to explore the interaction or meeting place, between their practice and their teaching. The workshop focus is on giving the participants ‘making’ space to explore their own creative practice and to discuss the experience of teaching as a practitioner, in relation to this.

Some projects or teams will have more to report in September 2009 than they can summarise in an abstract written in February 2009. To take account of this, the Co-Chairs of the Conference Committee emphasise that: "in judging proposals, ALT Reviewers will take an understanding attitude regarding proposals referring to or reporting on work taking place between now and the date of the conference".
- Deadline for receipt of proposals: midnight UK time on 16 February 2009;

Learning Infrastructures in the Social Sciences and Humanities

In the last 20 years, the learning infrastructures of the social sciences and humanities have transformed dramatically toward a more plural set of practices, methods, systems, and tools. In this issue, they are looking for contributions from social informatics, humanistic informatics, cultural informatics, digital humanities, internet studies, design research, media studies, and related fields dealing with the learning infrastructures. The editor is seeking papers that deal empirically, analytically and/or critically with the learning infrastructures in the social sciences and humanities.
Part of the debate surrounding learning infrastructures in the social sciences and humanities is the over/under-definition and over/underdetermination of terms such as learning and infrastructure in disciplinary and interdisciplinary discourses. In this CFP, the editor wants to encourage papers that help to define and critically engages those terms.
Review process will be double blind peer review following editorial selection. They expect to place fewer than 8 papers in this special issue. They would prefer papers between 4000-16000 words. Papers should be submitted to http://www.editorialmanager.com/linq/
