We are very pleased to announce that Networks 09 magazine, focusing on student engagement, has now been published online
JISC Learning and Teaching Innovation Grants Programme
JISC invites institutions to submit funding proposals for projects to undertake work under the fifth round of its Learning and Teaching Innovation Grants Programme.
JISC wishes to fund one year projects and activities that fit with the vision, outcomes and principles of the JISC e-Learning programme and support innovative approaches to learning and teaching. This is an open call, and projects dealing with any aspect of e-learning are welcomed. To reduce the initial investment in time and resource needed to develop a traditional JISC proposal and to encourage speculative and innovative ideas from the community bidders are invited to submit outline proposals.
JISC have run four previous rounds of the Learning and Teaching Innovation Grant funding opportunity in May 2008, August 2008, January 2009 and July 2009. In total, the programme has supported 14 projects.
Funds of up to £50,000 for projects of one year duration are available. JISC has committed at least £1,000,000 for this activity over the life of this programme which commenced in May 2008.
Proposals may be submitted by HE institutions funded via HEFCE, SFC, HEFCW and DEL Northern Ireland, and by FE institutions funded via SFC, DCELLS Wales and DEL Northern Ireland. FE institutions in England that teach HE to more than 400 FTEs are also eligible to bid provided proposals demonstrate how the work supports the HE in FE agenda.
Proposals may be from single institutions or consortia. Partnership arrangements may be developed outside the sector (for example with research council sites, publishers, commercial suppliers), but the lead partner must meet the criteria outlined above. Funds can only be allocated through the lead partner. Please note: The lead institution may only submit one proposal per assessment point.
The next deadline for submissions is 12 noon UK time on 19 April 2010.

TAG HEA Evidence-based Practice Seminar

TAG is a JISC funded research project that aims to explore the impact on retention of the creation of a dynamic, interactive, web based platform of support, which enables potential students to develop realistic expectations of HE. It was developed in response to research, such as that referenced in the report by the Comptroller and Auditor General (2007), which looked at retention and withdrawal in HE. Literature shows many students are coming from backgrounds where they have no peers or family members with experience of HE to draw on (Thomson and Quinn (2007) and the students’ expectations of university do not match the reality.
Delegates will have an opportunity to think about how they can support students during their transition into HE and potential ways of developing additional support, students can access as and when they require it. They will also have identified resources available to support them to do this. The TAG Team aims to make the TAG project as accessible to institutions as possible and would seek to gain and understanding from the attendees about possible barriers at their institutions to adopting TAG. This will inform the development of the TAG resources and support options the TAG Team can offer to other institutions looking to adopt the TAG project.

Mainstreaming Innovation in HE event invitation

The Design Council is pleased to announce that the next event of the Multi-disciplinary Design Network will be hosted by Professor Martin Binks at Nottingham University. This will be the third in a series of knowledge sharing events hosted by universities developing multi-disciplinary courses and collaborative programmes in response to the Cox Review of Creativity in Business.
Innovation is crucial to UK productivity and there is a direct link between the amount of innovation that companies invest and productivity output. Research indicates that two-thirds of private sector productivity growth in recent years has been driven by innovation. Design is an important part of the innovation mix and is only second to traditional investment in R&D for businesses. Design is being used as a strategic tool which enhances performance and unlocks innovation. How can HE centres build their enterprise and innovation?
The event will consider the importance and role of ‘pre concept’ innovation activities, innovation processes, building innovation studies into the curriculum and barriers to innovation in practice. Keynote sessions will include Martin Binks and Simon Mosey from UNIEI/NUBS, and Geoff Kirk, Design Council Board Member and former Chief Civil Aerospace Design Engineer at Rolls Royce. The University of Nottingham has one of the largest Entrepreneurship Education programmes in Europe.
This Multi-disciplinary Design Network event will build on previous discussions at Cranfield and Northumbria, and a visit to London firms which looked at innovation in different settings.

employability potential for design graduates through work based
learning experiences in the global fashion and textiles industry

This free seminar is part of the Academy's Evidence-based Practice Seminar Series 2010 and is being hosted by the University of Bolton. Places are limited, so please apply a.s.a.p.
How do we educate our students for a global industry and provide them with a contemporary skills base to equip them to survive and flourish whilst competing with many others for scarce employment? This seminar aims to address this question and will be facilitated by Cassandra O'Connor (University of Bolton) and Lynne Webster (University of Leeds).
The seminar will share the findings from a large data set that one of the presenters has been collecting for several years. This data set is from major UK fashion producers, importers and retailers to whom students have been sent for work placements as part of their Fashion Studies degree. This workshop will provide insight into current trends and issues relating to the appropriateness of design curricula; interaction between academia and commerce; the employability of students; and overarching, employer needs within the discipline area.
The session would be of relevance to academics and professional staff that are engaged in the support of work-based learning activities not only in the Creative Industries but across the range of disciplines. The workshop would be particularly valuable to individuals that are responsible for curriculum content and design, and for those that wish to fully engage with the issue of utilising a range of technology led learning situations and tools within complex educational settings involving external employers and commercial organisations.
The workshop will be structured to allow ample opportunity for participants to engage in group work and discussion based around these themes. The intended outcomes of the event will be an increased understanding of the current graduate employability agenda and the use of technology in curriculum design and content in this field.

International Summer School: Implementing Bologna in your institution

With the 2010 deadline fast approaching for alignment with the Bologna Process, the International Summer School in Cork, Ireland offers you the opportunity to acquire the strategies and tools required to enable the implementation of Bologna in your institution.
The Summer School will feature an experienced range of presenters addressing topics focused on the Bologna action lines.
Ireland has been very successful in implementing the action lines of the Bologna Process, evidenced by the country’s position at the top of the Bologna Scorecard in 2007, and its second place in 2009. Ireland is also one of the few European countries that has successfully established and implemented a National Qualifications framework.
The key people involved in assisting the implementation of Bologna in Ireland such as Dr Declan Kennedy (author of international bestseller Writing and Using Learning Outcomes), Dr Norma Ryan (Irish Bologna expert), Professor Áine Hyland (member of EUA’s Institutional Evaluation Team) and Dr Jim Murray (CEO of National Qualifications Authority of Ireland) amongst others will share their experiences and advise you on the best strategies to facilitate effective implementation.
The International Summer School is targeted at policy makers, senior managers, lecturers and educational developers in Bologna countries and countries aligning with Bologna. Please note that it is hoped to provide accreditation in terms of ECTS credits for those who complete this course.
