CALL FOR PAPERS/PARTICIPATION
Project Funding call for proposals
ADM-HEA is pleased to invite funding proposals for projects of 12 months duration, which will run from March 2010 to March 2011. There are three key themes for applications this year, which align with ADM-HEA’s current strategy:
Education for sustainable development
This strand aims to assist the development of curricula and pedagogy that will provide students with the necessary skills and knowledge to live and work sustainably.
Relates to ways in which the sector involves learners in all aspects of their higher education experience at course, department and institutional level. These activities range from student involvement in curriculum design and assessment, through to contributions to departmental and institutional policy through membership of faculty boards, engagement in institutional quality processes and involvement in university and college governing bodies.
Quality enhancement and student assessment
In our disciplinary area, this strand may relate, in particular, to issues emerging from and responses to, the National Student Survey (NSS) data. Equally, it could examine ways that courses, departments and institutions collect information on the student learning experience and use this to effect change and enhance quality. We are also keen to encourage work that explores student assessment in art, design and media and the feedback available to students to enhance their learning experiences.

Academic Integrity in art, design and media HE – reminder
ADM-HEA is collecting information about issues relating to academic integrity in art, design and media higher education. We hope to use any information that we collect to inform the development of resources to support students and lecturers in this area.
We would welcome your input and, in particular, your thoughts in relation to the following questions:
1. What do you think are the main issues relating to academic integrity? These might relate to promoting good academic practices, helping students develop skills in critical thinking or writing, or identifying strategies to help address plagiarism or collusion.
2. What are your main concerns relating to academic integrity?
3. What do you think are the particular challenges for some students (e.g. those who have English as an additional language)?
4. What about subject-specific issues or disciplinary perspectives relating to academic integrity – are there any particular issues here?
5. Do you think there's a place for generic resources that are designed to support students, or do you think that good academic practice should be ‘promoted’ within the discipline (or subject area)?
6. What kind of resources relating to academic integrity do you think are helpful? These might be designed to be used by lecturers, or by students.
7. Do you think there are any specific areas for which resources would be particularly helpful (e.g. where there is a lack of, or limited information, advice and guidance at present for students, or staff?)

Journal of Writing in Creative Practice Free Download:
The Journal of Writing in Creative Practice is the official organ of the Writing Purposefully in Art and Design (Writing PAD) network. It offers art and design institutions an arena in which to explore and develop the notion of thinking through writing as a parallel to visual discourse in art and design practice. The journal aims to extend the debates to all national and international higher educational art and design institutions.

The National Teaching Fellowship Scheme (NTFS)
The deadline for the all for 2009-10 project bids is Monday, 5 October from http://www.heacademy.ac.uk/ntfsprojects
The project strand presents opportunities for institutions providing higher education to build on the expertise of National Teaching Fellows. Project teams are able to bid for funds of up to £200,000 for use over a period of up to three years. The projects will bring significant and meaningful benefits to the students' learning experiences, both in the host institution and more broadly accross the sector. Project teams lead by an eligible English university or FE college can work in collaboration with institutions across the country.

A guide to resources provided by the Academy/JISC Collaboration Network
This publication celebrates the work of the Higher Education Academy and JISC Collaboration Initiative from 2007–2009 and provides an insight into the wide range of resources for enhancing learning and teaching through technology that are provided by the two organisations and their respective networks of Subject Centres, Services and Regional Support Centres
GLAD09 Conference: Dialogues in Art and Design

ADM-HEA is supporting and contributing to this event through the production of the conference book which brings together research work from the Centres for Excellence in Learning and Teaching (CETLs). Initiated in England and Northern Ireland, CETLs reward excellence in teaching practice, and invest in pedagogic development. Most of the CETLs are focused on specific subject areas or groupings in specific institutions. They have been conducting research projects, stimulating innovation and disseminating good practice since they were established. The GLAD09 conference, through dissemination and sharing the work of the CETLs across the whole of the UK, will help deliver substantial benefits to students, practitioners and HE institutions. This conference has been organised and sponsored by GLAD, ADM-HEA and the featured CETLs. It will be hosted by York St John University and the C4C CETL.
The cost of the conference is £180, or £279 including one night’s accommodation (21st October) at the Park Inn Hotel in York. The conference fee includes a copy of the new book.

Active Engagement in Learning Communities
12 & 13 November 2009
Please pass this message on to any students who you feel would be interested. As a cross-institutional learning and teaching student network we rely heavily on staff to identify students engaged in Learning and Teaching projects and point them in our direction.
This event is an opportunity for students to come together and share experiences of active engagement in learning communities.
Student delegates will have the opportunity to network with peers and representatives from education organisations, share your experiences and plan some ideas to take back to their institutions. They will also have an opportunity to become a member of the Student Learning and Teaching Network (SLTN), where they can continue to network through our interactive online site and receive regular updates of SLTN activities, student workshops and other events.
Attendance at the event is free for students.

A Series of Workshops on Visual Methods and Reflective Learning
Creativity Centre in the Cockcroft Building, University of Brighton

The Creativity Centre is presenting a series of workshops that address the current interest in visual and reflective approaches to learning. Each experiential workshop will focus on a method or group of strategies and their relevant theoretical contexts. The intention is for participants to gain the ‘know-how’ of one or more methods at each workshop and to explore how these might be applied in their own work situation. The series is aimed at anyone involved in teaching, work-based learning or personal and professional development.
Techniques for ongoing reflection, eliciting beliefs and values and conceptualising ideas. Helpful when introducing difficult abstract concepts and exploring the relationship between different theories.
Appreciative Inquiry and Solution Based Therapy.
Straightforward ways of supporting students, individuals and groups, to positively reflect on their current learning or working situations and make constructive changes.
Object Based Learning.
Strategies to stimulate the engagement of students through the structured use of objects and their cultural contexts. The session will include information on where to find resources.
Non-threatening drawing methods that investigate inter-personal interaction and communication. Especially useful for those involved in supervision, group work or professional practice.
The workshops are free but spaces are limited.

MeCCSA is the UK subject association for those teaching and researching in Media, Communication and Cultural Studies.
In keeping with the commitment of LSE’s Department of Media and Communications to policy-relevance and to the highest ethical standards of practice in our field, the overall theme of the 2010 conference is Media, Communication, Policy and Practice.

Competition for Best Paper on Art, Design and Media for Higher Education
The Art Design Media - Higher Education Academy Subject Centre (ADM-HEA) is offering a £500 prize and publication for the best paper analysing key issues impacting on media, communications and cultural studies in higher education.
Competition for Best Paper on Media and Communications Policy
LSE's Department of Media and Communications is offering a £300 prize and publication in its Media@LSE Electronic Working Paper Series (subject to final revisions by the conference organisers), for the best paper addressing critical perspectives on key issues of policy relevance in a convergent media and communications industry.

‘Do I really need to write an essay?’ Authenticity and assessment in Foundation Degrees

Following their November 2008 seminar on assessing work-based learning, they are holding a one day conference to explore further current practices in this aspect of assessment on Foundation Degrees.
They hope that you will be able to participate in the conference and to contribute to the development of the Guide good practice in the assessment of work-based learning in Foundation Degrees that FDF has commissioned SACWG to produce during 2010.
As part of the Guide, they intend to include a series of examples of effective, different or innovative assessment that have been or are being used in this aspect of assessment of Foundation Degree students. They are interested in specific examples of assessment practice rather than assessment strategies and policies about how work-based learning is or should be assessed.
If you have an example of such an assessment that you would be willing to share with colleagues, would you please complete the brief survey at http://tinyurl.com/FDF-WBL-survey by Friday 16th October 2009. Every example that is included in the Guide will be formally acknowledged with the name of the institution, the title of the Foundation Degree concerned and the name of the FD contact.

Promoting Equity in Higher Education

This two-day residential research conference provides an opportunity for colleagues to take stock of, and engage with, equity research five years after the HEFCE-commissioned ‘Barriers Review’ was initiated.
The wide-ranging review of widening participation research was critical about both the quality and scope of much equity-related research. It also noted the lack of evidence about the effectiveness and impact of work in this area. This event will examine the role of research in promoting equity in higher education, seek to build sector capacity to undertake and use research and evaluation data and provide the opportunity for delegates to hear about current projects.
Equity is taken to mean the access, participation and experience of diverse students in higher education, including institutional anticipation and response to diversity. In short, they are connecting the areas of widening participation and equality and diversity.
They envisage colleagues from the widening participation, equality and diversity, disability, lifelong learning, research, learning and teaching, academic/student support, marketing, recruitment and admissions communities will be interested in attending.
The conference is organised by the Higher Education Academy, as part of its EvidenceNet service.

Enhancing learning through technology (ELT)
Evidence-based Practice Seminar Series 2010: Calls for expressions of interest

As part of its HEFCE funded Enhancing Learning through Technology (ELT) programme Higher Education Institutions and Further Education Colleges delivering higher education based in England are invited to submit an expression of interest to run a seminar in one or more of three areas:
Assessment and feedback
Employability/employee learning – including work-related learning
Professional development in areas such as e-pedagogy and digital literacy
A grant of £500 is available to participating institutions to run a seminar between January – June 2010 and produce a briefing paper for the sector. Deadline for submission of expressions of interest is 13 November 2009.

Request for information from new academic staff
The Higher Education Academy has recently launched EvidenceNet (www.heacademy.ac.uk/EvidenceNet), a service to promote and support the use of practice- and research-based evidence in learning and teaching in Higher Education. Through the EvidenceNet search facility, colleagues in the academic community will be able to access a range of findings that can usefully inform and support their own practice.
The current EvidenceNet website (‘phase one’ – launched on 30 June this year) offers users access to resources and also holds details about events. They wish to develop EvidenceNet further in phase 2 by offering the facilities to support practitioners in sharing, exploring and engaging with the implications of evidence. The Academy is engaging with a wide range of stakeholders in a consultation process throughout the phases of development. They are particularly keen to get the views of new and recently appointed academic staff and educational developers.
Firstly, would you be willing to spare some time to complete an online questionnaire to ensure that future development meets the needs of educational developers. Secondly, if you would please forward the appropriate URL below to those who have participated in workshops that you have run for new lecturers/PG Cert programmes (in the last two academic years), or any other mailing lists that you may hold for this group.
