Art Design Media-Open Educational Resources Project 2009-10
 
The Art Design Media Subject Centre has successfully bid to manage an open educational resources project. The project is to be undertaken in collaboration with University of the Arts, London and the University for the Creative Arts, together with the Faculty of Arts at the University of Cumbria. This pilot project, which forms part of a wider national initiative, across multiple subject areas, is funded by the Higher Education Academy and JISC and aims to promote the development of digital repositories and the availability of open access teaching and learning materials.

NTFS Projects – Call for Bids 2009-10

The National Teaching Fellowship Scheme (NTFS) call for 2009-10 project bids is now available from http://www.heacademy.ac.uk/ntfsprojects
 
The project strand presents opportunities for institutions providing higher education to build on the expertise of National Teaching Fellows. Project teams are able to bid for funds of up to £200,000 for use over a period of up to three years. The projects will bring significant and meaningful benefits to the students' learning experiences, both in the host institution and more broadly accross the sector. Project teams lead by an eligible English university or FE college can work in collaboration with institutions across the country.

A searchable web directory of National Teaching Fellows has been developed and is now available on the Higher Education Academy website. The directory allows users to search by subject area, and areas of expertise, as well as surname, institution and year of award.

Recognising Personal and Social Education achievement in HE Admissions

ASDAN Certificate of Personal Effectiveness (CoPE) qualification.

Following national piloting and Aimhigher work ( http://www.aimhigher.ac.uk/sites/practitioner/programme_information/national_projects/asdan.cfm ) undertaken through HEFCE, the ASDAN Certificate of Personal Effectiveness (CoPE) qualification - which recognises personal and social development of learners - has been established in the National Qualifications Framework to support the HE entry and admissions process.

Information on CoPE ( http://www.asdan.org.uk/quals.php ) has been sent out recently by UCAS to all HEI Senior Admissions Officers.  The CoPE qualification at level 3 achievement has been ascribed 70 UCAS points (10 points more, for example, than an ‘A’ grade achievement of General Studies at AS level).  All three levels of the CoPE qualification have been signposted in QCA Guidance as an effective vehicle for recording, tracking and developing personal, learning and thinking skills (PLTS) for all lines of Diploma learning.

The CoPE qualification is used, equally, on the academic route alonside GCSEs and is signposted as a means of accrediting preparation for HE activity in the Higher Education Progression Framework. The UCAS ‘How To Apply’ Guidance to Applicants, under the heading Your Personal Statement suggests inclusion of: “Details of any accreditation achieved for activities in preparation for higher education for example through the ASDAN Aimhigher Certificate of Personal Effectiveness (CoPE Qualification)”.

This booklet argues that all undergraduate students in all higher education institutions should experience learning through, and about, research and inquiry. In undergraduate research, students learn and are assessed in ways that come as close as possible to the experience of academic staff carrying out their disciplinary research.

GLAD09 Conference
Dialogues in Art & Design: Promoting and Sharing Excellence

York St John University
21-22 October 2009
 
The GLAD09 conference is a unique opportunity to connect with teachers, practitioners and researchers in Art, Design and Media from across the UK through sharing excellence in teaching and learning.  GLAD09 will focus on the work of the Creative Centres for Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CETLs) in Art, Design and Media to enhance creative pedagogy and support excellence across our sector.  

Initiated in England and Northern Ireland, CETLs reward excellence in teaching practice, and invest in pedagogic development. The GLAD09 conference, through dissemination and sharing the work of the CETLs across the whole of the UK, will help deliver substantial benefits to students, practitioners and HE institutions.
Most of the CETLs are focused on specific subject areas or groupings in specific institutions. They have been conducting research projects, stimulating innovation and disseminating good practice since they were established. 

The GLAD09 conference participating CETLs include:

  • Centre for Learning in Practice (CLiP),  University of the Arts London
  • Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning Through Design (CETLD),  University of Brighton
  • IInQbate, The Centre of Excellence in Teaching and Learning in Creativity (Universities of Brighton and Sussex)
  • Collaboration for Creativity (C4C),  York St John University
  • Centre for Excellence in Product & Automative Design (CEPAD),  University of Coventry
  • Artswork, Bath Spa University


Challenging and insightful conference workshops will focus on topics drawn from a new publication, including papers from a range of researchers and teachers connected to the participating CETLs.  These workshops will be based around three main themes:

  • Learning, teaching and studio practice
  • Strategies, tactics and change
  • Learning spaces and learning technologies


This conference has been organised and sponsored by GLAD, the Art Design Media Subject Centre (ADM-HEA), and the featured CETLs.  It will be hosted by York St John University and the C4C CETL. The conference fee includes a copy of the new book.  Each participating CETL will also be exhibiting their work during the conference.
 
The cost of the conference is £180, or £279 including one night’s accommodation (21st October) at the Park Inn Hotel in York.  Book before the 3 August and you will receive the early bird rate (£160 / £259).  Bookings after 3 August will be charged at the standard conference rate.

Challenges in Interdisciplinary Learning (SEDA Workshop)

This event offers an opportunity to explore interdisciplinary learning from different perspectives.
 
Professor Pam Shakespeare from the Profession Learning Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning, The Open University, will open the day.
 
Di Stoncel, University of Northampton, will consider interdisciplinary learning on, and beyond, PGCerts.
 
Kate Irving, University of Chester, will speak on work-based learning as interdisciplinary study
 
Antonia Clews, Bath Spa University, will speak on the role of the teacher practitioner.
 
The price for this event is £95 and this includes lunch and refreshments.

Embedding CPD in Higher Education (SEDA Workshop)
Woburn House, London
Wednesday 7 October 2009, 10 am to 4 pm
 
In this workshop Mike Laycock and Liz Shrives will explore the issues and theories of Continuing Professional Development, the emergence of CPD schemes and frameworks and the reality of implementing CPD in higher education institutions. Drawing on the contributors to their recent SEDA Paper 123 ‘Embedding CPD in Higher Education’ they address major challenges and questions such as: what is CPD in the context of higher education? How can it be recorded and recognised? How can staff (not just academic staff) be encouraged to participate and value it? How can universities and university management work with their staff to use CPD for mutual benefit?
 
Aims and outcomes of the workshop
 
The workshop will adopt an interactive approach which will draw on the experience of the participants together with sharing the contributions of other practitioners. This will provide an opportunity to:
·               Examine some of the debates surrounding CPD in HE
·               Explore the principal factors involved in establishing a successful CPD framework
·               Encourage participants to identify practices which will might help embed CPD in their own institutions
·               Identify and discuss ideas for practice which can enhance the CPD experience for staff.

The cost of the workshop is £95.00 and will include a copy of SEDA Paper 123 and lunch.

Personal Tutoring in Higher Education – Where Now and Where Next? (SEDA Workshop)
Woburn House, London
Monday 26th October 2009, 10 am to 4 pm

Using the results of a literature survey and consultancy with a major UK university, this workshop will focus on the various personal tutoring models which are currently being deployed in UK universities. In particular, the workshop will explore the relationship between personal tutoring and widening participation, retention, the first year experience, on-line and distance learning and Personal Development Planning. It will also explore the business case for investment in this area, and the staff development implications of the models in use. Finally, the presenter will also summarise his research with a set of recommendations for future action which participants can consider in the light of their own institutional experience.
 
The workshop is based on SEDA Special 25 and led by Mike Laycock, the author of that publication.

Aims and outcomes of the workshop
 
The workshop will adopt an interactive approach which will draw on the experience of the participants together with sharing the literature review results and the research work of the workshop leader. This will provide an opportunity to:
·               Explore the different tutoring models that universities are using and how these models ‘fit’ with current and previous research and changing institutional contexts;
·               Consider some recommendations for future action and the implications of these recommendations for students and staff;
·               Encourage participants to identify practices in their own institutions which will help students and staff adapt to the new context.
 
Participants will:
·               Discuss the relevance of the findings from the research to their own area of work
·               Identify and discuss areas of practice which can enhance the student experience.

Journal of Media Practice

Call for submissions

The Journal of Media Practice is an international forum for debate on media practice, both within and outside of academia. The Journal is looking for contributions from colleagues involved in media practice around the world, whether as teachers or practitioners.
 
The Journal invites international contributions reflecting on the media practice landscape, addressing television, radio, video art, documentary, film, screenwriting, the internet, the press, or any other form of print, audio, visual or audiovisual media.
 
Submissions on policy, “industry” (or sites of practice), creative practice, aesthetics, pedagogy and critiques of the range of what can be called media” are welcome.
 
In addition to academic articles, the Journal encourages the submission of:
 
- Visual essays (images accompanied by text)
- Interviews with key media personnel and artists
- Reflections by media practitioners on their own practice (whether within institutions or as independent practitioners)
- Reviews of exhibitions and other media events and of books
- Critical pieces about changes in technology, content and delivery of media products and tools, or the work of media institutions around the world
 
Articles should be 5000 words, reviews 500-1000 words, and critical pieces and reflections between 1000-3000 words. The Editor is happy to discuss other possibilities with potential contributors.

Research Conference
Promoting Equity in Higher Education
27 and 28 January 2010
 
The deadline for submitting an abstract is Wednesday 14 October 2009. 

This two-day residential research conference provides an opportunity for colleagues to take stock of, and engage with, equity research five years after the HEFCE-commissioned ‘Barriers Review’ was initiated.  The wide-ranging review of widening participation research was critical about both the quality and scope of much equity-related research.  It also noted the lack of evidence about the effectiveness and impact of work in this area.
 
Equity is taken to mean the access, participation and experience of diverse students in higher education, including institutional anticipation and response to diversity.  In short, they are connecting the areas of widening participation and equality and diversity.
 
The organisers envisage colleagues from the widening participation, equality and diversity, disability, lifelong learning, research, learning and teaching, academic/student support, marketing, recruitment and admissions communities will be interested in attending.
 
The conference is organised by the Higher Education Academy, as part of its EvidenceNet service.

Retention Convention
What works?  Student Retention and Success
3 and 4 March 2010
 
Deadline for submission of abstracts is Thursday 17 December 2009.
 
This Retention Convention aims to identify research to help answer the question ‘what works’ in relation to student retention and success.  It further aims to promote theory and research evidence in this area.
 
The convention is jointly organised by the Higher Education Academy and Action on Access, and will draw on the Student Retention and Success Programme funded by the Paul Hamlyn Foundation and the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE).   The seven projects involved in the programme will be represented.

This convention is open to individuals with a strategic or operational interest in retention and student success.

Contributions to Next Generation Resilience - Sandpit

Deadline for applications 4pm Thursday 17 September 2009

A sandpit supported by EPSRC and ESRC under the Global Uncertainties programme to develop innovative approaches to enhancing the resilience to disruptive events of all aspects of infrastructure, including the interactions and interdependencies between areas of infrastructure.

The sandpit aims to bring together researchers and stakeholders from a diverse range of organisations and backgrounds to tackle these problems. Participants need not have detailed knowledge of, or prior experience in resilience research; rather they should have a proven track record in one or more areas that might contribute to solutions.

There is at least £3m available for research resulting from this sandpit, if suitable outstanding quality proposals are developed.

The sandpit will be held across 16 – 20 November 2009, venue to be confirmed.
