Academic Integrity – call for case studies in art, design and media
The Academy JISC Academic Integrity Service (AJAIS)
The key aims of this initiative are to enhance understanding of issues relating to academic integrity in the higher education community, and to highlight resources and encourage the sharing of best practice in this area. The AJAIS is working to identify subject-specific issues relating to academic integrity, and to improve the support provision for staff in higher education by ensuring that there is a coherent range of resources, including guidelines and case studies. These might, for example, recommend strategies for embedding students’ skills development in discipline areas, or illustrate how assessment activities might be designed in ways that tend to lessen opportunities for plagiarism.

Call for art, design and media case studies
Do you use innovative teaching and learning approaches in this area that you would like to share with others? We are planning to collect and share case studies that focus on areas relating to academic integrity, such as approaches involving formative assessment, or which require students to work collaboratively in teams - how have these assessment activities been devised to, for example, ensure that students develop good academic practices (and deter incidences of both text and non text-based plagiarism or collusion)?
We would welcome your interest in writing case studies and we have further information and guidelines available on the ADM-HEA website: http://www.adm.heacademy.ac.uk/resources/case-studies
Please submit your studies by Friday, 8th January 2010
Case studies will be reviewed by the ADM-HEA and AJAIS and evaluated for their relevance to the subject community, transferability and innovation. Successful case studies will be added to the collection on the ADM-HEA website and may be included in future ADM-HEA and Academy publications. Authors will receive a £300 fee.
2009 Call for Nominations to Peer Review College
The Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) is seeking nominations for new members to be appointed to its Peer Review College (PRC) in specified subject areas.
If successful, College members will be appointed for a term of approximately 4 years, commencing April 2010.
Nominations should be limited to those with expertise in one or more of the following areas, although this does not have to be their primary area of expertise. (Please note this is not the whole list)
Librarianship, Information & Museum Studies
Museum and Gallery Studies
Media and Communication Studies
Television History, Theory, Criticism
Film-based Media (practice)

White book: "Design: So what and who cares?" Symposium

‘Design: So what and who cares? Fostering continuous professional and business development’ is the title of the white book that European Design Training Incubator http://www.edti.eu/ (EDTI) Partners will release at the Symposium to be held on 18 December 2009 in London at the Design Council. This publication is specifically dedicated to design-related stakeholders: policy makers in education and training, educational institutions, educators, Continuous Professional Development providers, trainers, design and business support organisations.
During two years EDTI Partners have benchmarked, audited and researched the Continuous Professional Development related to design. The white book gathers major findings and recommendations to stakeholders to foster prosperity in the design sector and in the European economy at large.
EDTI Partners will also present the next stage of development for this collaborative initiative, opening the collaborative network, and providing new tools, material and useful information to be used by those involved in the Continuous Professional Development in the design domains.
Lack of recognition was one of the most commonly voiced concerns raised by designers and design graduates in EDTI’s qualitative surveys. The perceptions design buyers have of design and the designer’s role obviously needs to change. This is the reason why EDTI is striving to build a strong European network to bring designers and business closer together.
The task for the future is to interweave design education and training with the ever-changing dynamic business environment, especially with the needs of the small and medium sized enterprises, which are the backbone of the European economy.

This two-day residential research conference provides an opportunity for colleagues to take stock of, and engage with, equity research five years after the HEFCE-commissioned ‘Barriers Review’ was initiated. The wide-ranging review of widening participation research was critical about both the quality and scope of much equity-related research. It also noted the lack of evidence about the effectiveness and impact of work in this area. This event will examine the role of research in promoting equity in higher education, seek to build sector capacity to undertake and use research and evaluation data and provide the opportunity for delegates to hear about current projects.
Equity is taken to mean the access, participation and experience of diverse students in higher education, including institutional anticipation and response to diversity. In short, we are connecting the areas of widening participation and equality and diversity. We envisage colleagues from the widening participation, equality and diversity, disability, lifelong learning, research, learning and teaching, academic/student support, marketing, recruitment and admissions communities will be interested in attending.

The University of Bradford is hosting a one day workshop to enable us to share experiences on effective methods, processes and procedures for evaluating whether our current institutional Learning Environments are fit for purpose.
This free, one-day ALT LERSIG workshop is aimed at institutions that are in the process of reviewing their learning environments - the first learning environments to be reviewed are institutional VLEs.
The purpose of the day is to enable participants and their institutions to benefit from and build on the experiences of institutions that have recently completed a major review and/or implemented a major change to their institutional VLE. They have speakers from City University, the London School of Economics and Nottingham Trent University. Additionally they have representatives from York University and University College London on the Panel for the Question and Answer session.
The emphasis is on sharing experiences so that participants can identify approaches and methods that they can adapt to meet their needs and develop an action plan for their institutional review.
