ADM-OER (Art Design Media-Open Educational Resources) Project
 
With the pilot project now well established the institutional partners are in the process of clearing and uploading identified teaching-learning materials on to their host websites.
 
Open educational resources have become a major consideration in HE, both in a national and global context.  They have increasingly become the topic of much research, numerous publications, conferences and public discussion.
 
The Guardian newspaper, Tuesday November 10, includes an interview with David Sadler (The Higher Education Academy) and David Kernohan (JISC), which looks at the OER UK Programme and some of the key issues involved in open source learning.

Systemic change in the age of stupid. Lessons from Switzerland

Dr Rolf Jucker is the director of the Swiss Foundation for Environmental Education, an independent body tasked with mainstreaming Environmental Education and Education for Sustainable Development in the Swiss School system. Having gained an MSc in Education for Sustainability, he has worked extensively as an ESD advisor to the Welsh Assembly Government, the Higher Education Academy in England, the EAUC and others. He has widely published on the subject (see rolfjucker.net), amongst others Our Common Illiteracy. Education as if the Earth and People mattered (2002). His research interests relate to embedding systemic change and skills for a sustainable future.

Dispositions to Learn and Student Success

This seminar is part of the Research Seminar Series 2009: Access and Success for All and will draw on pilot research across HE in 2007/8 and current HEFCE and Paul Hamlyn funded research into student retention.
The seminar will explore:
·     The notions of the ‘strong’ and the ‘weak’ student in HE;
·     Professional legitimacy in relation to student development in HE;
·     Learning and teaching strategies for student success.

Qualitative research findings on the value of this process for staff and students will be presented and participants will be encouraged to consider strategies for developing effective lifelong learners.

The general theme of the conference is “Transcultural Communication – Intercultural Comparisons". The organisers call for proposals in all fields of communication and media studies, but particularly invite conceptual, empirical, and methodological proposals on inter– and transcultural communication phenomena and/or on comparative research.

International Journal of Sociotechnology and Knowledge Development
CALL FOR PAPERS - Special Issue on Knowledge Development and the Net Generation
 
Deadline for paper submissions: 31 January 2010

Members of the Net Generation use the Web differently, they network differently, and they learn differently. When they start at university, traditional values on how to develop knowledge collide with their values. Many of the teaching techniques that have worked for decades do not work anymore because new students learn differently too. The Net Generation is used to network; its members work collaboratively, they execute several tasks simultaneously, and they use the Web to acquire knowledge.

To be able to meet new changing demands in higher education, this special issue elaborates on the topic of how the Net Generation acquires and exchanges knowledge. They welcome research using a socio-technical approach that demonstrates how the Web can be used in higher education to facilitate students’ knowledge development.

Researching and EvaluatingPersonal Development Planning and e-Portfolios
International Research Seminar  to be held at the National College for School Leadership, Nottingham,
26-28 April 2010

Call for Contributions: Deadline 16 December 2009

Electronic portfolios are a rapidly developing global phenomenon.  In the UK, many Higher Education Institutions have chosen to use e-portfolio systems to support the implementation of Personal Development Planning (PDP). PDP supports students in recording and reviewing achievements, reflecting and planning for personal, educational and career development. A recurring theme has been the need for robust evaluation and research evidence to inform decisions about effective e-Portfolio and PDP practices.

Conference proposals should take one of the following forms:
 
1   Trigger Paper – these half-hour sessions will briefly synthesise current research, raise a key research and evaluation question, propose a novel research methodology or present research in progress [10mins] as a trigger for structured discussion [20 mins]. 

2  Research report – these half-hour sessions will report [20 mins report plus 10mins for questions] on completed PDP and e-Portfolio research and evaluation projects. 

3  Symposium – these 90 minute sessions will bring together a number of short inputs on a similar theme to allow more detailed discussion and/or workshop activities. Groups might wish to collaborate to offer symposia; alternatively, the organisers reserve the option of grouping contributions together around a common theme.
