2009 student writing competition

Reminder: ADM-HEA invites students studying on art, design or media higher education courses in the UK to enter this year's writing competition.  This year we invite students to research and produce a piece of critical/creative writing exploring the theme of learning spaces in art, design and media higher education.

The closing date for entries is Friday, 27 March 2009.

Launch of Research Seminar Series 2009: Access and Success for All
 
The Higher Education Academy, in association with Action on Access and Equality Challenge Unit, are launching a Research Seminar Series to promote the access and success for all students.
 
19 HE institutions and HE in FE colleges across the UK will be holding 19 research seminars from March to December 2009.  The series covers a range of equality and diversity topics and aims to promote research and evidence that has informed institutional policy and/or practice to address the diversity agenda and support success for all students.
 
Each seminar will have a minimum of 30 free places allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.  Bookings will be managed by each host institution.

Academy Senior Fellow applications

In 2007 the Academy launched a new category of recognition: that of Senior Fellow.   Unlike other applications for recognition, applications for Senior Fellow status are only processed twice a year.  The next deadline is Monday, 2 March.

Newsletter of the QATRAIN2 project is available

The Centre for Inclusive Learning Support (CILS) at the University of Worcester http://www.worc.ac.uk/cils is leading a European funded project to develop a comprehensive, online, searchable resource for teachers and trainers that will identify potential challenges that disabled learners might experience in engaging with their courses, and will also offer strategies and recommendations for adjustments to practice.  The online resource http://www.qatrain2.eu/ will go live in May 2009.

The overall aim of the QATRAIN2 project is to ensure people with disabilities are fully integrated into Vocational Education and Training (VET) by removing barriers to their entry and successful participation. The project will provide people with disabilities with a wider range of opportunities for learning and personal development and is also a major step forward in combating discrimination.  It will do this by enabling teachers and trainers of VET to better meet the needs of learners with disabilities, and to help VET providers enhance opportunities for people with disabilities. The resource is being developed in 5 European countries: the UK, Bulgaria, Greece, Romania and Turkey.

British Library Archival Sound Recordings: Prize for Student Work - Win a Wii.
 
Students are invited to submit an example of their work that has made use of any recording on the British Library’s Archival Sound Recordings resource. http://sounds.bl.uk/
 
Archival Sound Recordings makes selections of music, spoken word and environmental sounds from the British Library Sound Archive available online.
 
All recordings are available to licensed UK higher and further education institutions.  Staff and students can log in using their Shibboleth or Open Athens password to play or download recordings for academic use.
 
Criteria:
Work may take the form of research essays, articles as well as multimedia productions that use and repurpose these sources (NB: any use is subject to copyright and can only be used within an academic context).
 
Entry is open to anyone enrolled in a UK higher or further education institution until March 2009.
 
Deadline for submission is 23rd March 2009.
 
Written work should be between 1500-2500 words in length and any multimedia production should not exceed a total audio time of 10 minutes inclusive of extracts.
 
Criteria for evaluation are: 
Style and clarity of presentation
Evidence and extent of use of chosen sound resource
Understanding and insight into chosen sound resource
Originality of project
 
The judges will comprise members of the British Library and the ASR User-Panel.
 
The winning submission as well as a selection of runner-up work will be made available in various forms by the British Library and used to promote this valuable resource.

6th Learning Development in Higher Education Network (LDHEN) symposium: The Challenge of Learning Development
Bournemouth University
6 - 7 April 2009

The organisers are pleased to announce that they have a bigger and more varied programme than ever this year – with over 40 presentations/workshops, as well as posters, a labyrinth for reflective work and a graffiti wall. They ask you to join in and add your voice to the evolving conversation about learning development in the UK and Ireland.

The deadline for EARLYBIRD discounted bookings is 27th February! The AGM of the Association for Learning Development in Higher Education (ALDinHE) will be held on the Monday evening, at which reports will be presented and elections will be held for membership of the Steering Group. Further details will be circulated nearer the time.
Keynote Speakers
Dr Dennis Hayes, co-author with Kathryn Ecclestone of 'The Dangerous Rise of Therapeutic Education will open the conference with a talk about the history of 'study skills' in HE, and why we should take note of his concerns about 'therapeutic' approaches.

Professor Alan Mortiboys, author of Teaching with Emotional Intelligence will speak on the second day to give his perspective on the challenges of our work.

Students as Researchers: Novice to Expert; The First Annual ESCalate Student Conference

This is a unique event, bringing students from all levels from undergraduate to PhD together, to listen to and exchange ideas with peers and professionals UK-wide. The key-note speaker, Professor Jim Conroy, Dean in the Faculty of Education at the University of Glasgow, will be addressing the conference on:

Negotiating tricky corners: becoming a researcher in Education

Other sessions will include information on cutting edge research techniques, undergraduate research, research and dissemination opportunities and students' own research experiences.  It will also provide a student-only poster session and an introduction to valuable networking opportunities for student researchers.

Outline
An introductory blended learning course to introduce participants to Second Life and other Web2 technologies to enhance student learning.
 
The course is hands-on, and as well as considering the use in learning of virtual worlds, participants will start by creating their own avatar and conclude with a collaborative virtual mini-project.
 
To get the best out of this course it is recommended that you create a free account in Second Life (if you don't already have one) and it is also recommended, but not necessary, to complete the orientation tutorial.

Image 2.0: Digital Media Futures
Interdisciplinary Conference

September 10-11 September 2009

Proposal (250-500 words) deadline: 10th March 2009

This interdisciplinary conference aims to examine intersections between digital technologies and visual media. Organised by Falmouth‚s School of Media, the conference will provide a space for debate on the present state and the future of visual media as they enter a new stage of development, where established boundaries between disciplines and practices, as well as between producers and consumers, are dissolving.
 
They invite both traditional academic research papers and practice-based presentations to promote cooperation and exchange of experience between scholars and media practitioners. The fields and disciplines that the conference will focus on include film studies, photography, web design, advertising and digital animation. Other academic or creative fields will be considered insofar as the exploration of their modes of practice refers to (or relies on) digital technologies.

Call for papers:
They invite established scholars, emerging researchers and graduate students to present papers on a wide variety of topics but are particularly interested in theoretical and practice-based approaches to the following:

  • Textual/genre analysis (how digital media affects visual storytelling in film, photography and animation genres);
  • Distribution/production/exhibition of creative visual work in the global (or national) context (Internet film exhibition, web publishing, accessibility, interactivity, new forms of leisure and media consumption. Media 2.0, Web 2.0);
  • Representations (digitally based minority creative groups and subcultures, digital media  in relation to gender, sexuality, race, immigration, and visibility within the dominant culture);
  • The changing nature of the moving image (reception and audiences of digitally based film and animation, YouTube, MySpace, video streaming, digital archiving);
  • Art vs. commerce (the blurring distinction between the two, photography and creative advertising);
  • Learning and Teaching (digitally based research and methodologies for analysing visual media, blogging, digital archives);
  • Alternative cinema (digital technologies and their impact on producing animation, documentary, pornography, experimental films, music videos, etc.);
  • Legal and ethical aspects of digitally based visual media (control, censorship, pressure groups, copyrights).


Submission guidelines (paper proposals):
Please email the title of your proposed presentation and 250-500 word abstract with a 100 word biographical statement. Please note that long CVs will be rejected. All proposals must be included in the body of a single email.

Call for creative work:
As a part of the event, they intend to put up an exhibition of digital photography and illustration, as well as a space with facilities for streaming videos. Therefore, we encourage entries of photographic, illustration, poster, and film work from media practitioners, artists, graduate and undergraduate students. Any piece of original work is invited as long as the images and films are digitally based. Those submitting will be fully responsible for any copyright clearance related to their work (including music).
