Announcing the Art Design Media Teaching Fellows for 2009/10
ADM-HEA is pleased to announce that six awards were made under the Art Design Media Teaching Fellowship Scheme (ADMTFS) for the academic year 2009/10.
The scheme is part of ADM-HEA’s aim to support the professional development and recognition of staff in HE and to ensure that their teaching is valued and rewarded.
The particular focus of this award is on studio-based teaching staff who have previously been under-represented in institutional or national award schemes. In this context, studio based teaching may include: museums, labs and field work in a specified creative practice context.
The award may be used for personal and/or professional development in teaching and learning.
The Scheme's strength is that it recognises the diversity of the staff who support student learning in art, design and media subjects and how crucial individual teachers are in the support and enhancement of the student learning experience.

Art Design Media-Open Educational Resources Project 2009-10
The Art Design Media Subject Centre has successfully bid to manage an open educational resources project. The project is to be undertaken in collaboration with two leading arts institutions, University of the Arts, London and the University for the Creative Arts, together with a faculty of arts committed the development of virtual learning, the University of Cumbria. This pilot project, which forms part of a wider national initiative, across multiple subject areas, is funded by the Higher Education Academy and JISC and aims to promote the development digital repositories and the availability of open access teaching-learning materials.

Student Employability Profiles Survey
The Higher Education Academy’s Student Employability Profiles have now been in use across the sector for almost five years and they are following up on the outcomes, usage and success of the profiles with a short survey. They aim to collate information on how the Profiles have been utilised and adapted by practitioners to develop student skills and enhance their future employment opportunities.
The survey results will inform the Academy’s future work in further developing the Student Employability Profiles, to enhance graduate employability through effective learning. The survey should take no more than 15 minutes of time to complete and this can be can be accessed via the link below:

JISC infoNet provides free, predominantly web-based, resources built around its infoKit branding to promote good practice and highlight innovation in the use of ICT within the education sector.

Effective Practice in a Digital Age
Effective Practice in a Digital Age - a guide to technology-enhanced learning and teaching provides the further and higher education sectors with a welcome update to the popular 2004 JISC publication, Effective Practice with e-Learning.
Effective Practice in a Digital Age is designed for those in further and higher education whose focus is on designing and supporting learning: academic staff, lecturers, tutors and learning support staff, facilitators, learning technologists and staff developers, and others with an interest in enhancing the quality of learning and teaching, and a curiosity about how technology can assist them.
The publication can be ordered in hard copy from http://survey.jisc.ac.uk/digitalage or downloaded in PDF and accessible text-only formats from http://www.jisc.ac.uk/practice . In addition, a number of supplementary resources are available online in the Effective Practice Resource Exchange http://www.jisc.ac.uk/resourceexchange which may be added to over time. These currently include themed video clips covering topics such as Responding to learners and Rethinking learning resources, a range of podcasts and audio resources, plus extended versions of the case studies.
All resources associated with this publication can be downloaded for use in educational contexts.
A UK-wide distribution of Effective Practice in a Digital Age begins this week, targeting senior managers with a responsibility for the curriculum and heads of e-learning and staff development. The publishers recommend this resource for your personal use and for discussion with colleagues and curriculum team members.

Learning technologies and learning technologists are now at the heart of modern learning, and yet our community still faces many challenges, for example:
- learning from history to build on past gains and avoid previous mistakes;
- spreading innovations that are of true value, rather than mere fads;
- redesigning pedagogy, the curriculum, and assessment methods to secure a substantial positive impact on learning;
- ensuring cost effectiveness by various means, from working effectively at a large scale, to supporting peer-assisted learning cultures;
- developing a research culture that informs practice, and a culture of practice that uses research evidence.
To rise to these challenges, we must dream and act on our dreams, but evidence must justify the choices we make. ALT-C 2009 will provide a broad forum for practitioners, researchers and policy-makers from all sectors to explore, reflect, and learn.

All Our Futures 2 - Getting Real - Investing in our Future - by Design

There is a need for ‘minds capable of creating new possibilities to transform our current ways of thinking and operating’. So says Lord Stern in the foreword to HEFCE’s recent Sustainable Development Action Plan. He has in mind the changes in skills, values and knowledge that are needed in the context of climate change. This is the challenge for education world-wide at all levels. Education for sustainability is the response, where ideas, innovation and networks are brought together, both in policy-making and practice. In parallel, design for sustainability is developing the technologies needed by business to move ahead in a responsible and sustainable way in a rapidly changing and uncertain social and economic environment.
This conference aims to bring together these communities of practice, to see what learners, teachers, researchers, designers and policy-makers in business and in the public sector can learn from each other, what new interdisciplinary ideas can be generated and what synergies can be achieved.
The conference is for all those involved in education, looking for a stimulating and unusual platform and environment for the dissemination and sharing of ideas and good practice in the wider community.
Making Futures: The Crafts in the Context of Emerging Global Sustainability Agendas

Authenticity and assessment in Foundation Degrees
Are you developing your practice in assessing work-based learning within a foundation degree or similar?
SACWG is working on the practical and pedagogical challenges of assessment in this context. What is the employer’s role and where should the academic share assessment oversight?
Researchers / Practitioners will be exploring the issues and seeking to inform good practice.
Discussions will include consideration of initial results from a questionnaire survey on assessment of work-based learning in Foundation Degrees.
Coffee/Tea from 10.00am for 10.30am start, to conclude at 4.30pm.
Refreshments and Lunch are included in the cost of £95.00.

Forthcoming courses from the British Universities Film & Video Council (BUFVC)
Regular one day courses and workshops are held at the BUFVC, promoting subjects related to the use of moving image in learning, teaching and research. A range of topics are covered, such as copyright, streaming and shooting with high definition video. They are also happy to consider running courses outside of London, and welcome approaches from universities who are interested in hosting such events.

MeCCSA 2010 Conference
6 - 8 January 2010
MeCCSA is the UK subject association for those teaching and researching in Media, Communication and Cultural Studies. The organisation holds its next conference from 6th -8th January 2010, hosted by the Department of Media and Communications, London School of Economics and Political Science and held at LSE. It includes a reception and conference dinner at LSE.
In keeping with the commitment of LSE’s Department of Media and Communications to policy-relevance and to the highest ethical standards of practice in the field, the overall theme of the 2010 conference is Media, Communication, Policy and Practice.
Registration for the conference will open on 15th September 2009
Call for Abstracts
The organisers invite papers, panels, presentations of practice and posters across the range of interests represented by the Association and its networks (http://www.MeCCSA.org.uk). Some sessions will weave together ‘practice’ and ‘research’ and there will be separate screenings, in full, of this material.

The MeCCSA Executive Committee is offering a poster competition prize of £100. The academic poster is highly valued by MeCCSA as an indicator of current research and there will be a good space set aside at the 2010 conference for this activity.
Competition for Best Paper on Art, Design and Media for Higher Education. The Art Design Media - Higher Education Academy Subject Centre (ADM-HEA) is offering a £500 prize and publication for the best paper analysing key issues impacting on media, communications and cultural studies in higher education.
Competition for Best Paper on Media and Communications Policy LSE's Department of Media and Communications is offering a £300 prize and publication in its Media@LSE Electronic Working Paper Series (subject to final revisions by the conference organisers), for the best paper addressing critical perspectives on key issues of policy relevance in a convergent media and communications industry.

Meeting the current challenges: the humanities and employability, entrepreneurship and employer engagement

The question of student employability has rapidly risen up the agenda in the past few years at both departmental and institutional level. Whilst students of humanities disciplines develop the intellectual skills and attributes widely sought by employers (e.g. critical thinking, time management, constructing arguments, and intercultural and communication skills), teachers of humanities subjects in higher education can find it very challenging to help their students articulate these skills and attributes to themselves and to future employers.
Demonstrating that the study of the humanities creates economic, social and cultural value has particular poignancy in the present economic climate.
Organised by five humanities subject centres and the Routes into Languages programme, Meeting the Current Challenges is a one day conference aimed at teachers of humanities in higher education seeking to enhance the employability of their students. The conference aims to share good practice across humanities subjects.
Call for papers
With reference to employability, entrepreneurship and employer engagement, the organisers welcome papers/ session proposals in the following areas of activity.
- Case studies of practice in particular humanities disciplines
- Working with employers
- Embedding employability and entrepreneurship in the humanities curriculum.
- Working in partnership with careers advisors
- Assessment and evaluation of employability-related activities.
- Student work experience in the UK and abroad.
- Residence/ study abroad.

The new journal Craft Research, published by Intellect, will be launched in 2010 (http://www.intellectbooks.co.uk/journals/view-Journal,id=172/).
Craft Research is the first peer-reviewed academic journal dedicated to developing and advancing contemporary craft practice and theory through research. Its purpose is to portray and build the crafts as a vital and viable discipline that offers a vision for the future through its ability to explore and challenge technology, to question and develop cultural and social practices, and to interrogate and affirm philosophical and human values.
Craft Research welcomes contributions from new and established researchers, scholars and professionals around the world who wish to make a contribution to advancing the crafts. Contributions may include research into materials, technology, processes, methods, concepts, aesthetic and philosophy in any discipline area of the applied arts and crafts, including craft education. Accepted formats include full research papers, position papers, reports on research linking craft and industry, craft-researcher portraits, and reviews of research exhibitions and conferences.

All Our Futures 2 - Getting Real - Investing in our Future - by Design
This conference, to be held from 15-17 September 2009 at the Sherwell Centre, University of Plymouth, aims to bring together the imperatives of design, business and education: that we design a world that we can go on living in, and that we communicate to each other the values, insights, skills and technologies informing this design.

The conference organisers are inviting contributions from designers, architects, researchers, teachers, learners, business, policy-makers, community activists and creative and performing artists. They want to bring to the conference insights and challenges drawn from inside the academy, but also from the world outside, where stubborn but also exciting problems are being confronted and solutions found. They particularly welcome contributions in the form of panel discussions, workshops, posters, exhibitions, music, installations, film, video, time-based media and other complementary explorations of the conference themes.
Each session is allocated 30 minutes; presenters are encouraged to allow generous time in the session for discussion. Double sessions may be arranged.
