Craft Entrepreneurship Dissemination & Networking Symposium

Location:
University College for the Creative Arts, Farnham
Date(s):
26 June 2008 12:30-17:00

The Workshop
The Arts Council publication 'Making it to Market: Developing the market for contemporary crafts' (2006) acknowledged the crafts as a significant component of the creative industries, estimated to be worth around £883 million and with a potential to increase its market by 63%. However, significant barriers to realising the potential of the sector were identified e.g. poor brand image, lack of business skills and weak distribution networks. As a leading provider of craft higher education in the region, UCCA at Farnham designed the Craft Entrepreneurship Workshop to begin to address some of the challenges faced by the sector. Over 30 students in craft, entrepreneurship, marketing and branding from 10 universities across the South East worked in teams to develop innovative branding and marketing proposals. Aided by industry experts, teams developed commercialisation strategies for different craft enterprises. The Workshop was a great success receiving positive feedback from students "relevant, inspirational, professional, informative..."

The Symposium
The Symposium will be used to launch the publication 'Craft Entrepreneurship' featuring case studies for some of the teams involved in the Workshop and to disseminate findings and good practice from the day. Aimed at academics, enterprise professionals and Arts and Crafts Council representatives, the Symposium will share findings from the Workshop, look at ways to sustain the impetus created and consider future models for creative entrepreneurship.
